At the center of the captivating rolling meadows, resided a boy named Shepherd. His existence was unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to tend to his flock of rams.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes through the solo tree on the hilltop were his only companions. Day after day, looking out for his charges imbued in him a sense of calm satisfaction.

Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for fellowship. During one such occasion because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a naughty scheme.

Tales of wolves hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no beast.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of dishonesty.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for here teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was then.
